Kurt Busch Is Serious Enough About NHRA to Get a License

Editor's Note: A version of this story first appeared at www.competitionplus.com

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Drag racing has fast become more than just a hobby to Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge. In fact, he is as serious about the sport as he is about racing in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series.

So it was on a beautiful late fall day this week at Rockingham Dragway that Busch earned his NHRA Pro Stock license, taking the next step forward in his pursuit of going straight and not turning left. The Las Vegas native ran fast enough in a Roy Hill-owned Pro Stock to be eligible to drive in the NHRA's third-level series behind Top Fuel and Funny Cars.

There was no fanfare. No champagne. No cheering crowds -- only a few high fives and warranted smiles between the empty concrete, steel, and wood bleachers looking on aside both the left and the right lanes.

There weren't even any other competitors on site. It was Busch, his crew, the track prep crew and Roy Hill, a former drag racer and now drag racing school owner.

For three days, Busch and his crew -- all dedicated to drag racing -- worked under the tutelage of Hill and were put through the paces to ensure that come 2011, the 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion and his team would be ready for whatever might transpire on the drag strip.

Did City Planning Approve 430 Extra Parking Spaces at Riverside Center?

The 1992 Riverside South environmental impact statement shows that City Planning intended to replace 1,000 parking spaces that were already in use at the vacant Riverside Center site (see "On-Site Demand"). Those replacement spaces had already been accounted for when City Planning approved 430 new replacement spaces for the Riverside Center project. Even by its own [...]

2011 Dodge Durango ? First Drive Review

Elegant and relevant: Dodge leaps back into the thick of the SUV game. We?ll cut to the chase: This new Dodge Durango is the brand?s best vehicle not called Charger. LA 2010: Mercedes-Benz shows off Biome concept for LA Design Challenge

Mercedes-Benz Biome Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Each year the LA Auto Show plays host to the Los Angeles Design Challenge, where aspiring designers partner with automakers to envision the future of mobility. This year's theme was to create the 1,000-pound car, and Mercedes-Benz' three designs - one from the U.S., another from Germany and yet another from Japan - are predictably out there.

The entrant from Mercedes' U.S. design arm in Carlsbad, CA was not only rendered but built into a full-scale model. The basis for the Biome Concept is a vehicle that "grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery." Not only that, but it's powered by a combination of the sun and a chemical bond from an imaginary liquid dubbed BioNectar4534. It's all natural, all organic and all science fiction. Size-wise, the Biome comes in at a theoretical 875 pounds, but it's massively wide, slightly shorter than a CL and about as tall as a Vector.

M-B's German design team created the Smart Weight-Watch, an ultra-compact dunebuggy with removable and recyclable plastic and cloth panels, a carbon fiber tub and tires (you read that last part right) and a lithium-ion battery powering two 15 kW motors. Total weight: exactly 1,000 pounds.

Finally there's the Maybach eRikscha from Japan, a four-passenger, two-wheeled "amalgamation of organic intelligence and biomechanical engineering artistry." Ummm... sure.

You can bone up on all three concepts in the press release after the jump and check out live images and design sketches below.

Alonso admits strategy a mistake

Fernando Alonso has admitted that Ferrari's decision to pit him on lap 14 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in response to Mark Webber's stop two laps earlier, was a mistake. Alonso was running fourth and needed to finish there to secure the world championship if Sebastian Vettel won the race. Ferrari called him in to ensure he stayed ahead of Webber, but failed to plan for Nico Rosberg and Vitaly Petrov, who had stopped under safety car conditions on lap one.
