Customer Mini to compete from Portugal

The first customer-run Mini will join the World Rally Championship before the works team this year, with Brazilian Daniel Oliveira set to begin his campaign on Rally Portugal in March. The 25-year-old Brazilian, who competed in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2010, has agreed a deal with Prodrive to enter a Super 2000-spec Mini on the third event of the WRC season, before switching to a WRC-spec version later in the year. Oliveira will be co-driven by Portugal's Carlos Magalhaes, the pair having driven together in the IRC last year

CES 2011: Blue Link is Hyundai's answer to OnStar

As part of its quest to match the rest of the industry point-for-point, Hyundai has just announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that it's entering the world of telematics with the introduction of Blue Link, its first foray into the safety and convenience sphere.

Similar to OnStar, Blue Link handles everything you'd expect, specifically directions with turn-by-turn navigation, point-of-interest searches, remote door-locking/unlocking, vehicle health reports, maintenance scheduling, crash notification, remote start and - according to Hyundai - 30 other features at launch. Included is a vehicle slowdown feature to aid police if the vehicle is stolen and a new "geofencing" system that sends a text message to the owner if the vehicle strays outside a prescribed area or route. Little Jimmy will not be pleased.

Hyundai is also touting a new voice-to-text feature that allows drivers to reply to a text message with custom commands rather than canned responses.

Blue Link is set to arrive this spring, initially on the Sonata sedan and a "youth-focused model" (*cough* Veloster *cough*) before the summer, with the system rolling out to every Hyundai by 2013. Hit the jump for the full details.

Ferrari announces late January launch

Ferrari has announced that it will launch its 2011 car in the final week of January, ahead of the first official test of the year that starts in Valencia on February 1. Although a majority of outfits are expected to unveil their new challengers in Valencia, which is the first of four pre-season tests, Ferrari is expected to follow tradition and reveal its new car at Maranello once again. The team has not committed itself to a set date yet for the launch, but has confirmed that the car has already passed a series of mandatory crash tests.
