It would seem that General Motors has discovered that the defective axle cross pins responsible for a recent recall were installed in more vehicles than originally thought. The automaker has expanded the recall to cover a total of 26,751 vehicles, up from the 1,262 units in the original notice. As of right now, certain 2011 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe models as well as GMC Canyon, Sierra and Yukon models are included in the newest recall. As with before, the vehicles were built with rear axle cross pins that may not have been heat treated. As a result, the pieces could fracture and move out of position. If this happens, the defect could actually cause the rear axle to lock up while driving. Needless to say, the problem could easily cause an accident. GM will replace the pins free of charge, though the recall isn't scheduled to get underway until January 25. The company says that while one owner did experience a loss of power to the rear axle as a result of the defect, no accidents have been reported. Hit the jump to take a look at the full recall notice. [Source: NHTSA]Continue reading GM expands axle pin recall to include more pickups, SUVs

Volkswagen's Nasser Al-Attiyah clinched his maiden Dakar Rally victory with the second-fastest time on the final stage, which was won by his team-mate Carlos Sainz. Al-Attiyah hit the front of the legendary event when long-time leader Sainz lost a lot of ground in sand dunes on stage eight earlier this week. Sainz tried to fight back only to suffer even worse delays with various damaged components on stages 10 and 11, pushing him back to third in an all-VW podium behind Giniel de VilliersSource: http://www.inracingnews.com/3rdparty/al-attiyah-claims-first-dakar-win/
FIA president Jean Todt's push to use experienced drivers as race stewards in Formula 1 has been deemed a huge success by one of the men who helped fulfil that role in 2010. Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen joined the race stewards' panel at the Australian Grand Prix last year as part of a new FIA-initiative to get a drivers' perspective when making rulings on incidents. HRT did offer to pay its outstanding Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) membership fees after it left the body, sources have revealed to AUTOSPORT, amid ongoing intrigue about the situation surrounding the team's departure. There has been intense speculation over the past week about why HRT left FOTA, with conflicting reports about whether it was suspended over unpaid subscription fees or because the team was unhappy about the organisation's failure to help smaller teamsSource: http://www.inracingnews.com/formula-one-news/f1-formula-one-news/hrt-offered-to-pay-fota-fees/
