Spotter's Stand: Does 'Boys, Have at It' Include Texas Tussle?

NASCAR had itself a day of resurrection Sunday in the drama department at Texas Motor Speedway.

Kyle Busch showed his, uh, displeasure with a NASCAR official. Jimmie Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus gave NASCAR's weekly talking heads a shot in the arm by abandoning his pit crew mid-race. Denny Hamlin became the first guy in five years not named Jimmie to be leading the Chase with two races left.

Lastly, the sport saw two of its veteran stars go toe-to-toe in a brief hockey-like moment in the Lone Star State. Yep, four-time champion Jeff Gordon took several unabashed lunges and swings at longtime series staple Jeff Burton.

Gordon didn't connect terribly well in all of his flailing, and Burton emerged unscathed -- though maybe a bit more emboldened to try Gordon in the boxing ring sometime in the future.

Video: Nissan GT-R pitted against F3 racer... in the wet

Formula 3 car versus Nissan GT-R on a wet track
Nissan GT-R vs. Formula 3 racer - Click above to watch video after the jump

People love running the Nissan GT-R against anything else they can think of... as long as it has four wheels, it must be compared to the Japanese coupe. We've read countless stories of Godzilla taking on cars far above its power grade and price range, yet the stories and videos keep popping up. To be honest, we would compare the turbocharged Nissan to a Wal-Mart shopping cart if it meant we could score some more heavily-bolstered seat time. Autocar seems to agree with this notion, because they lined up a Nissan GT-R, a Formula 3 racecar and a rain-soaked racetrack.

Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar managed to talk himself behind the wheel of a Red Bull Formula 3 racer, and he ran it for a few laps around a wet track. He set his best time, then jumped into the GT-R. Did he manage to better his time in the purpose-built racer? See for yourself by checking out the video after the jump.

Nissan recalling 605,000 Frontier, Xterra and Sentra models over two issues

2002 Nissan Frontier

Nissan XterraNissan has issued a voluntary recall on select Frontier and Xterra models due to problems with the lower steering column joint and shaft, as well as the Sentra sedan for problems with the positive battery cable terminal. Just under 605,000 vehicles are affected by this recall, which is set to ramp up in early December.

Approximately 303,000 Frontiers and 283,000 Xterras in the United States, Canada and a number of Latin American countries can develop corrosion that limits the movement of the lower steering column joint. If this issue is overlooked, it can lead to the steering shaft cracking.

Sentras, on the other hand, have developed a problem with the connector on the positive battery cable terminal, which can cause the car to have issues starting, or can possibly result in stalling at low speeds. Approximately 18,500 Sentras manufactured between May 15, 2010 and July 8, 2010 are being recalled for this reason.

Affected model years depend on where the vehicle was manufactured, and you can see the full details in Nissan's press release, after the jump. Thanks to all for the tips!

Button not expecting team support role

Jenson Button says he has no intention of trying to disrupt McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton's title rivals' races in tomorrow's Abu Dhabi decider. The out-going world champion reckons that with Hamilton needing to win with Fernando Alonso not scoring, and both Red Bulls also taking lowly finishes, there is little he could do to assist his team-mate anyway

BREAKING: Chevrolet returns to open-wheel, supplying Penske for 2012 IndyCar

Chevrolet supplying V6 engines for IndyCar series

It's official: Chevrolet has announced a return to open-wheel racing, and will supply V6 engines to Team Penske for the 2012 IndyCar Series. Longtime open-wheel fans will remember that the Bowtie brand supplied engines for Indy-style racing from 1986 to 1993, and then again from 2002 to 2005. The return was a rumor earlier this week, but General Motors made the announcement this morning and offered a glimpse at what's in store.

The new engine, which is being developed by General Motors and Ilmor engineering, will be a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 2.4-liter V6 running on E85 fuel. Aluminum will be used for the block and cylinder heads, but other technical specs are not yet available.

Penske is the first team to fully commit to an entire Chevrolet-powered lineup for 2012. However, in accordance with the rules of the series, the engine will be available to any teams interested.
